Powerbook G3: Boots into Grey Screen. App to disable modules

Hi,

I have this powerbook G3 with Jaguar on it.

Everytime i boot normally it boots into a grey screen. I've gone to mac.com and looked up their suggestions but non of them have worked. When I boot into safe mode everything seems to work fine.

When I boot to CD, I get a screen that is half blue, and half black! it's weird.

Im starting to think that this is a video driver problem. Is there an easy way of disabling kernel modules; instead of just moving them from the /library/ directory?

Initially it indeed sounds like a hardware (video) issue if you get the same when you boot from CD.

Is there a known working external screen you can plug in? I think that you would not see your finder bar or dock, but if all goes well, you should see the desktop background. This would serve to confirm that the video display of the laptop is shot.

Otherwise, what do you see?
 
Ok,

When I boot into safe boot. I can connect an external monitor(even a projector) into the VGA output and it works fine.

If I boot from CD the laptop LCD goes wierd and the external monitor looses signal.

Now I figured out that the laptop has an ATIRage128 8mb card. I went into the /System/Library/Extensions directory and moved all video modules that were not associated with the ATIRage128. That didn't work. I even removed some others for hardware that isn't installed even though I know darwin doesn't load them if the hardware is not there.

I know that on normal boot, the screen goes into

1 - grey apple screen
2 - grey screen w/ mouse(shortly)
3 - Blue screen
4 - grey screen no mouse

Can anyone tell me what the boot sequence is loading at these times?

Can anyone point out what safe boot is not loading to make the system boot correctly?

ANY help will be greatly appreciated.

Ok,

I was thinking of trying one more thing before doing a fresh install and crossing my fingers, is it possible to find later versions of the Rage128 driver and use those?

where can I get them. I downloaded the 10.2.5 update and tried to find it there but, there is a lot of stuff and I can't isolate the file.

any suggestions.
