hello all-

my powerbook g3 has a problem it starts up good the desktop comes on and then after eveeything is loaded the pointer freezes including the computer i can only restart pressing the 3 buttons ctrl-apple-power button...i decided to take off the memory out and something happened...it took a little longer for the pointer to freeze

Did you install any other applications before this all started happening?

I hope you didn't take the memory out while it was on...please tell me you didn't do that...(I know it's a silly question, but I have to ask...you'd be surprised.)

no the thing is the powerbook was running good until the sound card (where the charger plugs into as well) went bad i took it out had it soldered and i put it in but it never re started i bought a used g3 same model and everything and transfered the hardrive and it boots up but after you see the desktop it freezes i have to unplug it to i can shut it down i ran it in single user mode fsck -y it says the hardrive appears to be ok also tried running disk utily it says the hardrive is ok also. this is gonna be silly but i dont know how to post pictures here but if u email me i took a screen shot of the error message i got today for the first time its really long but the camera took the pic backwards if i can mail it to you .the first line says unresolved kernel trap (cpu 0) 0x300 - data access dar=
latest crash info for cpu 0
excception state (sv=0x0e118800)

thats just a few lines the last ones read like this:

kernel version 5.5
thu may 30 14:51 26 pdt 2002; root:xnu/-201.42.3obj˜1/realease_ppc

memory access exception (1,0,0)
waiting for remote debugger conection

i have no clue if this might help you at all-oh and no i didnt instal anything and i never took the memory out while it was running-but what would happen if someone did that? thank you for responding to this thread thank you thank you...lol i like this g3 it must come back from the comma its in. >=0)

OK, I couldn't really make any sense of what was on the attachments since everything is in reverse as though the picture was taken from a mirror. :p

Considering that you transferred the drive from one machine to the other, I think this might be your problem. If you still have the installation discs, I recommend doing an "Archive and Install" installation, which will create a new System directory and will preserve all the applications and files you had before. The old System directory will be called something else so that it's not used by the PowerBook. Give this a try and see what happens....remember, select the "Archive and Install" option.

Good luck.

ok sorry to ask but what disc do i use the os x or 9.2? iam booting up from the cd right? by pressing the letter c.

If it's OS X that you're going to archive and install, then you should use the OS X CD. And yes, hold down the C key after you hear the Mac startup chime.

Just thought I would point out that the "archive and install" option started with v10.2.

That option isn't going to be there on a 10.0.x or 10.1.x installation CD.

Hmm....I'm not sure but I believe that OS 9 will see your files and you might be able to back them up from there. This is assuming that you still have Mac OS 9 installed of course.
