Powerbook G4 Error

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum, and needed some help badly..
I picked up this used g4 off my buddy for free since its got this error thing... I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix this thing..

heres the problem:
I boot it up, and it gives me this thing in the middle of the screen, and it flashes from a question mark to the little apple face sign infront of a folder and it just stays theredoing nothing, and then about a minute in it just shuts off...

does anyone know the problem and how i'm suppost to fix it? apparently the mac just froze one day on him, he tried to reboot it and it gave him that, so there msut be something i can do to fix it.. I'm assuming i could just burn a bootup disc then reformat it some how...
