I have a PowerBook G4 and while trying to open a software application it froze (1st time ever). I restarted and couldn't get pass the login window. It wasn't recognizing my password, I tried several times and finaly decided to use the Software Install and Restore disk and reinstall Mac OS X. Now everytime I get passed the login page, it takes a second or two and goes directly to the Darwin balck/white window.

Please give me some advise on what to do, I'm not a mac expert so I'm at the end of my options list. Thanks.

Reboot the machine... hold the OPTION + S keys down. it should boot into a single user mode - no graphics..just some text. At the >prompt... type in FSCK -FY just like it mentions. This will hopefully clean up any lost issues with your OS files.

Keep doing the FSCK -FY until there are no error messages displayed, then type reboot..and all should be good.
Before your reboot - remove all the external doodads - leaving only the keyboard and mouse. if it boots fine, then plug in the rest of the ancillary stuff.

You can try AppleJack and see if that helps too

Actually, even booting in Safe Mode runs fsck -fy in the background so that's also an option, but you can't see it happening though. Just hold down Shift to boot into Safe Mode. If you boot up OK, login and then run Disk Utility and verify that your hard drive is OK.

I am experiencing the same problem, out of curiousity have you found another solution yet? I do have the disks, so if someone could walk through how to use the disks to aleviate this problem. I just want to be able to get back to the login screen.
