PowerBook Screen Brightness/Contrast?

I have read that I can't change the brightness/contrast of my PowerBook's screen under X Beta; is this the case? If so, can I change it when booted under 9 and have the new settings preserved in X Beta? If not, at what brightness/contrast level would I be stuck?

Someone on another board (forget which or where) mentioned that they were able to change these by starting classic then going through the monitors control panel in classic...

haven't tried it on my ibook yet, as I tend to avoid using classic if at all possible...too much of a resource hog...
