Powerbook will not boot into OS X when things are plugged in

freaky

OSXer
I just got one of the new 15" PowerBooks. For some reason it keeps flashing a blue world in a square whenever I boot up and have my Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse plugged into a USB port and a wire plugged into the ethernet card. It will only boot up if I remove both of the wires (not just one).

Will somebody tell me what I need to do so I don't have to keep plugging/unplugging wires into the laptop each time I reboot? It's getting to be a pain.

Try to open System Preferences and from there select Startup Disk. There select the 10.2.x hard disk and Save and Restart.

Did the problem dissapear? Let us know...

Oh, and welcome here too! :)

Hello,

I followed the steps that you said to do but for some reason it's still flashing with the blue world square when things are plugged in.

Also, whenever I go to shutdown or restart from the Apple menu, it doesn't respond. The only way I can shut it down is to hold the power button down. Do you have any idea why this isn't working correctly?

Hmmmm... VERY strange indeed! I have a link in my signature... Click and read there carefully! If things will remain the same wait for someone else here to give you some advice... Personally, I'm tired now and I cannot think clearly: it is 01:45am here in Greece! If no one will reply for some hours or a day or two try to erase and install the OS X installation! I know for a fact that some factory installations aren't THAT good! If the problem will remain, take your PowerBook to the nearest Apple authorized dealer and let them help you... It's a new model and I haven't got the chance to play with it :( Not yet! ;)

Oh, and try press and hold the X key while booting (immediately after listening to the startup chime)... Does that make the PowerBook to boot into OS X?

PS. What puzzles me the most is the problem in Shut Down/Restart...

World on a Square??? sounds like it's trying to netboot. That almost makes sense with the Ethernet cable plugged in (a little, anyway - you unplug that and it no longer tries to net boot)which should be a Network setting that's incorrect, but what would that have to do with your mouse? Did you download and install the version 5.0 installer for the MS wireless mouse? What other software have you installed? Did you install ANY software to setup your internet or network connection? (Macs shouldn't need any software added for internet or network (just settings required), with the possible exception of DSL.
Does it start correctly and (important) shut down completely when the external items are NOT attached?

For some reason the settings that hulkaros said to do didn't stick. I made the changes and installed the MS version 5.0 mouse software and my startup/shutdown problems have disappeared!

Thanks for the help guys!
