Is an airport card essential for WiFI broadband connection? My machine worked fine on a local internet via D-link & a Buffalo G54 air station broadband router, but now the system is switching to something else and when tested I receive nothing!

Was the D-link connected to your computer by an ethernet cable?
You do need some kind of Mac-compatible wireless card or device
attached to or installed on your computer to connect wirelessly.

*I was under the impression that all newer macintosh computers
have wireless cards pre-installed.
