preparing external hard drive for use by timemachine

Hi folks, I have a 750 GB external drive that my wife has been using for backups from her windows machine. It came preformatted using fat32.
I can read and write to it from the mac. But timemachine only wants to use
an hfs file system. I wanted to shrink the fat32 partition and create a hfs partition from the newly freed space and then use timemachine.

The mac disk utility will not resize the partition, nor will the disk management utility in vista (the shrink volume option is grayed out in the vistage disk management utility).

Any suggestions?

Have her format the drive for the partition size you want/need. Then connect to the Mac and reformat the partition OS Extended. If you want her to read/write the Mac formatted drive take a look at MacDrive for Windows.

Hi unfortunately the drive has a significant amount of data so formating the whole thing and repartitioning is not an option (I could have just use the mac disk utility for that).

I need to resize the fat32 partition and then create partitions from the free space.
