Press power, lights up, fans BEGIN to spin then shuts down. Within 1 second.

Tried:
New RAM, new set of Processors, Video, Hard Drive.

Motherboard or Power Supply?? Anyone see this?

Thanks much!!

Definitely sounds power supply-related. Had a MDD dual G4 that exhibited the same problems -- power light comes on, but as soon as I release the button, it fades out. Sometimes would stay on for a few seconds, but always shut down before the computer actually booted.

Turned out to be a bad power supply, which, apparently, cannot be fixed for less than the cost of a new/used MDD dual G4 (unless modding an ATX power supply is in your cards, which it's not for me).

I could have fixed it. It's funny how most techs don't understand how to repair PS units. It's like a lost art of some kind.

It was the supply. The water cooling leaked where I could not see it and shorted a Zener diode on the power supply board.

Damn water cooling units.

I hear Apple's been replacing leaky water-cooled G5s with base model Mac Pros (instead of repairing them) as of late. They have been doing this even with G5s that are years or more out of warranty. Apparently, it's a "known issue" and perhaps even a design flaw, and it's very altruistic that Apple is replacing these (in most cases) without question. I highly recommend taking advantage of that generosity!

It wouldn't hurt to put the power supply back in it's prior state and see what Apple says... ;)
