printer not working

I am using a mac os x 10.4.11 connected by USB to canon ip1800 printer.
this printer used to work fine with this computer.
now won't print
will print test page but not from any application (ie text edit)
the job looks as if it will print and then job is stopped.

i have done everything i could find recommended on web.
deleted job
deleted printer
re installed driver from cd and from web
repaired disk permissions
changed usb hub

this printer will print fine from other computers when connected by usb

i am lost i have tried for AGES
please help

would installing an older op system help?
 
First try to Reset Your PRAM to see if that helps. Plus lets really fix that printer setup by download the shareware (they have a 7 day trial) Printer Setup Repair (for 10.4.x) and run all the fixing routines.

One of these steps might help. Plus reset your printer and make sure all the ink wells are filled and the printer heads are clean.

i tried resetting the PRAM and now all the text on my desktop and folder labels is replaced by AAAAAA uh oh
