Printer Problems

With OSX 10.3.9 our Canon i865 printer is painfully slow printing some simple black & white stationery.
(the Mac StyleWriter2 used to be 10 times as fast)
I can't find any options anywhere to reduce print quality or anything else for that matter(like in OS Classic)
When I tried to install Gimp-Print 5.0, it just went totally haywire..... so I tried 4.2.7: It failed at the last step of the set up process because the i865 doesn't seem to be listed.....
So I'm back to the Canon drivers with zilch options to try and improve its printing speed.
Are there any solutions, please???

My son has been able to put me on the right track in the meantime:
In the Print Window: Go to Copies & Pages --> Quality & Media, where you can change the print quality and speed things up (and save ink)....... You have to do it EVERYTIME before printing, as it reverts back to default instantly.
Mac Help was unable to direct me there and it took my son ages to discover this option.
I would still like to know how to get Gimp-Print working for the i865, please.
