printer que problems or something

printing is a very frustrating thing for me. it is very intermittent and for seemingly no reason. it seems that files that i print get stuck in the /var/spool/lpd/myPrinter
this is what it currently looks like:

any clue on how i can fix this?

and when i view the printer job list in the print center these jobs don't appear.
