Printing : Can Not Add Lan Printer

I am using a TiBook 667 with OSX 10.1.5. It is connected to an Epson USB 1270 printer which works (more or less). When connected to a LAN network, I can see the printers available on the network, but when selecting one (under Printer List>Add Printer>Apple Talk or LPR printers using IP) I receive an "unexpected error occurred -108" message. I had a number of IT people trying to fix the problem (checking Apple Talk settings, etc.) but th eproblem remains: I can see but cannot connect to and use LAN printer.
Any suggestion ?

Upgrade to 10.2.x, so you can use CUPS and a much improved network scan for available printers

thank you for your sugegstion.
I have since found the following on the Apple web site (Apple Care Document) http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106726. I have not tried it yet, hope it works before moving onto 10.2.
