printing lists from finder

... can it be done, and if so how?

I'm sure that it was possible to print a folders contents in the list view on OS9. Is this still possible with OSx from the GUI

If you have a desktop printer, just drag the folder and drop it on it. It will print the contents of the folder.
If you don't have a desktop printer icon, open Print Center/Printer Setup Utility and drag the printer to the desktop, or drop the folder on the icon there.
 
This is ok for printing text only lists, but is there a way to get it to print thumbnails too (the way that you can view files in finder)?

That software is quite limited, compared to the old OS 9 feature. Only list view, only _some_ sorting options (less than the Finder has at least) etc. ... I hope Apple will solve this for all of us some day. This always was my favourite printer test page. ;-)
