Printing Margins Changed.

Starting with Mavericks, and persisting into Yosemite, I noticed some strange behavior with printer margins and/or print image size. Most of the time now, the horizontal and vertical margins seem smaller - sometimes so small that edges of the print image are cut off. The issue is independent of any application. In those print dialogs that offer it, I enter 90% scaling and things are mostly OK. However ...

This morning I was trying to print a full page of return-address labels on an Avery form, the doc created some time ago with Word '11, and I wasted 45 minutes and several forms trying to nudge things into place. So finally I'm asking for some advice.

BTW, my printer is an HP Envy 4500, but it also happens on an Okidata C331 attached to my wife's iMac, running 10.6.8. There are no problems printing to either printer when starting from her iMac.

Are you using HP's printer software or Apple's printer software?
If HP, contact their support.
How could the HP software affect the Okidata printer (?)

So, Whitehill - to clarify. Are you saying that the on-screen margins are OK, yet the paper output is ALWAYS larger (fills more space on paper, despite what the on-screen margins appear to allow?
Are you using a paper setting which is the wrong size? (US letter, vs. A4, or some other international size?)

I'm using Apple software with HP's driver.

It looks OK on screen, but bad on paper. Even before paper, it looks bad on screen in the mini display in the print dialog. (?) Yes, it seems to fill more space. No, it's set for US Letter.

Try removing the printer driver again.
Do it this way: Open the Printers & Scanners pref pane.
Right-click on your printer list, and choose "Reset printing system..."
That removes all printers/scanners, and all pending print jobs.

Make sure your HP printer is using a USB port of your iMac.
Re-add your HP printer. Don't reinstall HP's software yet, just use the print setup as it is presented to you by your Mac pref pane.
Try a test print, particularly one that you already have struggled to print properly.

DeltaMac, I did as you advised, but the issue persists. However I managed to refine it a little. It does NOT affect printing for things I compose with apps on my iMac, except for one described below. I subscribe to some online services that prepare reports for me as PDF files. Most notable is Intuit Online Payroll. These things used to print just fine, but now I have to use 90% scaling.

The app that started this rant is Label Printer Pro 7. I deleted its preferences and reinstalled it, but it still screws up. As a sanity check, I fetched Avery's free app and built my label for the same form - it prints perfectly.
