does anyone know if te pro speakers work with the powerbook G4's? applestore say its a different size jack but im not so sure, its a minijack and as far as i know a minijacks a minijack. anybody know?

Yea, minijacks do come in different sizes for different applications, speakers and some microphones have different jacks.

Sorry, but the Apple pro speakers won't work with anything but the models which they are sold with. What the small (2.5mm) jack is, is a proprietary connector that works with an integrated amplifier built into the new swing-arm iMacs. Without the digital amplifier, the sound output through the speakers will be about the same as a pair of headphones--not nearly enough to hear from 3 feet away.

Nor will the ones you can buy work with a PowerBook G4.

The PowerBook G4 does not provide enough power to power the Pro Speakers, and so will not work (the USB edition ones).

It is possible though, if you're a bit technical, to connect the sound output on a PowerBook or any computer to the input on an amplifer (not too powerful, check the Pro Speakers tech specs), and connect the output to the pro speakers. That should work, I suppose :)
