So here i am running an iMac DV 500 (w/CD-RW 128 MB RAM, 20GB Hard Drive) with 10.0.4 on it, and i recently recieved a copy of 10.2 as a gift from one of my computer buddies.

Now i had to delete everything to partition my drive so i could fit 10.2 on there. (thank goodness i back everything up) but when I went to install it, it said it was unable to upgrade this version (10.0.4) to 10.2

Why is that?

*hopes that someone tells him that he doesn't need to go out and buy 10.1 first*

Any and all help in answering my question is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance to all that can help, and i apologize if i'm a total moron. but well, forgive me, I'm jsut a youngin' :P

Take care, all

sounds like your buddy 'gave' you a copy of an upgrade CD, not a full install version. since these were intended to only be used by people with macs purchased just before jaguar was released, they look for an 10.1.x system since these computers would have shipped with that. sorry, you're out of luck. i'd suggest you go and buy 10.2.4 if you want it.

aside from that, we don't allow help hacking and pirating on this site. if you're using a 'borrowed' install disk, you're on your own. sorry.

Oh no no no no, the box wasn't opened. I don't like using illegal software, yo. Certain moral issues of mine kind of make go the straight and narrow route.

simple enough, the company was going out of business, and they were merely trying to get rid of inventory. He knew i had Mac OS X 10.0.4 and wanted to upgrade, so he snagged me a copy.

anyways, i'll just give you the info that it says on the CD and maybe you could help me determine if this is the right version i wanted.

"Mac OS X v10.2"
"Upgrade"
"Install Disc 1"

(and yep, there's a second disc, too)

so is that the upgrade version that won't work, or the version that will allow me to upgrade from my current OS?

sorry if i wasn't clear earlier about how i obtained the CD's. Might have helped a little, no?

thanks for the prompt reply tho. I appreciate it.

yea, for the upgrade you need 10.1 first, for all the reasons i mentioned before. it is not intended to be a independent install. your only bet is to obtain a copy of the 10.1 update cd from somebody. while it was free, apple never made this a download. so you'll need a friend or a store that still has one.

but technically you're still using a product that wasn't intended to be used as you are using it. you're still pirating in that you don't own the system and mac that the upgrade was intended for - the upgrade cost considerably less than the real deal. so that's all the help we can give you. i'm closing the thread.
