Problem connecting to the internet for the first time

Hi,

I just bought my first Macbook. I have been able to receive email in Mail, but when I open Safari I get a blank screen that says "server is not responding". Network diagostics says my internet connection is fine, system update couldn't connect either. I connect thru a cable connection, with just a modem and no router. I set up the connection with my service provider, so all of those settings should be correct.

You are having a common mistake in networking (with any device) that is new right behind a cable/dsl modem. When someone connects a new device directly connected to a modem you must turn off the modem for 5 minutes then turn it back on. This will reset the modem to look for a new local primary connected device. Hopefully this should fix the problem.
