Problem importing from cameras

A friend cannot import video data using either of 2 Sony cameras (VX1000 & VX2100) connected to either of 2 firewire ports on his Apple computer.

Recently the OS,applications were reloaded for some reason and this has resulted in present problem.Prior to that the cameras worked fine.

He is trying to import the data into the "Cinestream" application by Media 100 but gets a message such as:

"DV player component could not be found"

(he seems to think that this is actually there but the computer isn't detecting it).

Could this be because this component is disabled? If so,how do you enable it?

Unfortunately,I can't give the Apple model (it is about 4 yrs old I think) or the OS (think it might be OS 9).He's away on holiday at present-I could no doubt find these out later if necessary...

Is there a list of things I need to check? I use Microsoft Os's-very ignorant about Apples.

Thanks very much.

The OS he's using and Apple model are kind of important in order to troubleshoot this. OS 9's extensions differ greatly from OS X's, and the Mac model is needed to discern whether he's using the built-in firewire, a firewire PCI card, or some converter.

BTW, the VX2100 is not on the list of OS X compatible camcorders:

ElDiablo,Thanks for reply and sorry for the long delay in replying.I finally contacted my friend, who sent the following:

350 mhz Blue and white G3, one of first avaialble ( so new no modem)
runs Mac OSx.2 and Os 9.2.
230 gigs hrd drive
640 ,megs ram
always had trouble getting it to recognise USB devices
very reliable on firewire between camera sony VX1000 and computer.
Now camera says DV in
But computer can't see camera and says DV player component is missing but I can see it in the OS 9 extensions folder ( Cinestrem only works in 9)
I have re-installed everything to no avail- posible hardware firewrire problem?

Thanks for any comments-Mike

The Blue & White had a firmware update. Did you install that on the OS 9 side?

Cheryl,thanks for the reply.

1. Must admit I was a bit confused by my friend's statement "runs Mac OSx.2 and Os 9.2" I think it's unlikely he has them both on disk at the same time (even if this is possible?). I think from what he has said in past, only one OS is loaded at any time.

2 The firmware update for blue and white that you mention: was the point that this should be installed if using OS 9?

Thanks.

Firmware should be installed while booted in OS 9. Then it helps all of the machine, no matter what OS you use.
Start up in OS 9, download the firmware from here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58374

Follow the steps on that web page.. You should print it out so you can read it over before doing anything.

When we say Run Mac OS X and OS 9... it does that. Both system folders are on the same hard drive. You have the choice of using one or the other - yes, one at a time. The bonus is Classic. It emulates OS 9, while booted in OS X. The trouble is not all functions of some programs will work. That is because OS X takes over the machine and you can not do anything in the Control Panels while using Classic.
