problem linking MacBook to Netgear router

My brand new MacBook running 10.4.6 cannot see my home Netgear DG834GT router - not by wireless or even with the ethernet wire plugged in. The same computer does see next door's wireless router (linksys, model not known), and the ethernet port functions elsewhere too, so it appears to be a compatibility problem. Can anyone suggest what settings I need to change?

By the way: the router does work for other computers, including a previous G4 Powerbook running 10.3.

Is it because you use a password to log onto that router? Also does your router hide itself by MAC address? You need to log into the router with one of your other computers to verify the settings on the router.

Thanks for your ideas.
no password, and no hidden router - the name of the router appears in the airport list. Another computer (a PC) is logged on successfully (by ethernet) the whole time. The settings on the router appear OK, and as I said, theses ettings worked no problem for the G4 powerbook.

In the end I worked it out - had the router set up to only accept specific addresses - a part of security I had forgotten about.
