Problem partitioning MacBook Pro hard drive

I have an early 2008 17" MacBook Pro with a 250gb hard drive, running Snow Leopard. I want to create a 70gb partition so I can install a second Snow Leopard OS so I can upgrade that to Lion without messing with my original OS partition. When I use disk utility to partition the hard drive, it runs a verify on the disk, then says it's shrinking the original partition. At that point it runs for 1/2 hour to 45 minutes, then the entire system freezes and I have to do a hard reboot. Can anyone give me some ideas on why I can't repartition this drive? I've run diagnostics on it, and the drive checks out fine.
