Problem reading DVD & CD on MacBook Pro

Hi All,

I have a MacBook Pro running System 10.5.8. It refuses to play some original movie DVDs, just throwing them back. And now I got a problem with an original CD containing a language learning program — it is recognized by my comp only as a blank CD.

Anyone knowing what is it and how to solve this problem?

Thanks!

Sounds like a dirty &/or dead optical drive. Are you still under warranty?

If not, get a cleaning CD/DVD at any store and try it before you consider replacing the drive.

Thank you for the response!

It reads some other DVDs and CDs without problems. For example, I don't remember I've ever experienced any problems with reading custom burnt disks. I would say it rather happens to original disks I buy.

Could it still be problem with the dirty reader, or the dead reader then?

Btw, I bought this comp a year ago. Shouldn't be so old for getting something dead?

Best,

Possibly.

"Dead" can come at anytime. In fact, "dead" happens far more frequently early on.

Still, I'd attempt to clean the drive before panicking. Apple's optical drives are often finicky toward some brands of media.

o.k., I've just tried to read different disks to find any system, but it looked to have some random order. It seems the comp doesn't read any DVDs anymore. It read original music CDs, and didn't want to read custom burnt ones. Sometimes it just throw them back, sometimes open as a blank disc (both CD and DVD).

Also I forgot to say, I think I've never ever managed to burn a CD or a DVD on this comp. It usually stops when verifying starts, saying 'error 0x80020063' (at least when I tried now to burn a CD it gave me this error number) and throwing the disc back.

Could it really be because of dirty reader?

Thanks!
