Problem transferring files to external HD

Hi all,

I'm trying to copy the contents of my 2nd internal drive to an external drive (Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus), but at some point during the transfer it stops copying and completely locks up my computer. Not sure what the problem is.

I don't know if this is related, but when I try and repair the 2nd internal disk while I have any other firewire (or usb) drives connected, I get an error message "unable to unmount disk". When all other drives are disconnected, I do a repair and there is no problem. Is that normal?

Oh, and read write permissions are set, so that's not the problem.

What format is the drive you writing to?

Mac OS Extended with journaling.

Now I'm getting a kernal panic anytime this drive is plugged in and the computer boots. That can't be normal. It's gotta be this Maxtor drive right?

Well, I'm overwhelmed by everyone's comments. I returned the drive.
