Hi Guys,

I seem to have a wierd problem. I cannot download or upload attachments through any browser. So far I have tried Safari, Camino, Netscape, Opera and Internet Explorer. When I try to upload or download an attachment, the browser tries for a while and then I get a message saying "The document contains no data". I'm using an eMac (1 Ghz) with Mac OS X 10.3. Please help!

Are these attachments for any particular website, or are they from an email program? If so, what email program are you using? Also, how are you connected to the net?

Hi,

Thanks for your kind reply. I am not using any email program. I am trying to upload attachments through a browser (Safari, Netscape, IE etc). I do not face this issue with specific attachments. I face it with all of 'em. No matter what type of attachments I try to upload, it just doesnt happen. My Internet is DSL (256 K). Hope you can help. Let me know if you need more info!

Thanks,
Anees

you may need to see if what you are trying to upload falls with what ever web sit you are trying to upload to. Some will say no files past 64K or some will say no Pics other then say 120x54. You maybe running into that. Hope that helps.

You problem seems to have nothing to do with your browsers. Which webmail site are you using?

Hi MisterMe, thanks for the reply. This problem doesn't seem to be dependant on the email service either. I have tried Yahoo, Rediff, Gmail so far. With all 3 I face the same problem. I also cannot access certain websites. For eg. I cannot access www.microsoft.com and www.wwe.com. I can access other sites though. I do not have a firewall installed or enabled. This problem really beats me. Is there something that I can try or do you need more info?

That's hairy. Just for more info, try going to a speed test site like this one and let us know what the results are. Just curious what upload/download speeds and your general quality of service (QoS) rating are.

When you say "I cannot access www.microsoft.com", what do you mean? What happens, exactly?

Also, just for kicks, look in System Preferences / Network / Built-in Ethernet / Proxies (or ...Airport / Proxies if you're connecting wirelessly) and let us know if anything's checked off.

Hey Billbaloney, thanks for the respone. I did the Internet speed test and here are the results:

Download Speed: 88.1 kbps
Upload speed: 56.7 kbps
Quality of Service: 30%

When I open microsoft.com, it just says "Waiting for www.microsoft.com" in the status bar and after sometime I receive a message saying "This document contains no data". When I do a traceroute to www.microsoft.com, it reaches the site perfectly fine. I've also looked at the Network configuration options in System Preferences and havn't found anything wierd or suspicious to be incorrect. I have no clue about this problem It beats me completely. Any moe thoughts??

That's a pretty bad QoS rating...you're losing a lot of packets. The download/upload speeds seem to fast for a dial-up modem connection, so my guess is you have an aDSL connection and a bad phone line. Is that possible?

Try this from a Terminal window. At the prompt try this:

cd ~/Desktop
curl -O http://www.nytimes.com/index.html

You should see progress output to the screen, and then you should find the "index.html" file on your desktop. This file should be around 85-95K. If it's not, there's a connection problem, most likely. If it is, but you can't get the same result in a browser, there must be some proxy for your browsers somewhere that's mucking it up.

Give some more details about your connection and your network.

Hey Billbaloney, I think it's a connection problem. I did what you said from the Terminal window. It's now past 3 minutes and it's still trying to download that file (And it won't download). And yeah! You guessed it right!! I have an ADSL connection with a very bad QoS. Could this be a DSL line problem? Or is it a problem with the modem itself?? Also, please let me know what info you need about my network or connections? It's a standalone eMac G4 (1 Ghz) with a 256 K DSL connection, Ethernet DSL Modem (Yozan - Web Distributor II).

By the way, I asked many of my friends and "experts" about this problem. None of them were able to narrow it down like you did!!! I relly appreciate it ;-)

Cheers,
Anees

You could have a noisy phone line, or you could have a bad modem. Your modem may be in need of a firmware upgrade. It's time to call tech support for your DSL service, let them know your poor QoS, and have them run some standard line tests, and hear what they have to say. Ask them if they still use this modem with new customers, and if not, ask why. You might be able to get them to admit there's a possible problem with the modem, and then to get you a new modem.

Let us know what happens.

Sure!! Will do that.. I had called their tech support earlier and they didnt have a clue about it. I think I'll just ask a support guy to come over with a new modem to do the testing. Let's see what happens! Will keep you informed. Thanks for all the help.

Cheers,
