Problem with connecting to server via server name

Hi there people! :)

Just a little query really.

We have just completed a project to move over to a new subnet and ip address range here at work.
Every thing has gone really well apart from a small issue with connecting to our network servers via the server name.
Before we made the change it worked fine.
We were able to do the following:
Go> Connect to server> Server address> liverpool > Connect

And away it would go.
But since the change it would not work.

To get around this we've had to input the domain into the 'Search Domains:' field in the Network Preferences.

This then allows to connect via the above method.

It's works fine as it is now but would just like a bit of a clue as to why it has changed all of a sudden.

Thanks all,

Rich

The servers are probably on a different subnet, so when you try to connect by name, your computer is only looking within your own subnet and since the servers are not there anymore, the extra measures had to be taken in order to search beyond your "home" subnet.

I don't know, just a guess.

Good guess but all servers and clients are on the same subnet 255.255.0.0

But could it be that the clients have an address of the following 172.31.150.xxx and all servers have an address of 172.31.0.xxx ?
