My Installer.app's stopped to work, any .pkg I try to run fail, the message is something like "there was an error witH Installer".

I think it's possible that some temporary files is locked, do you know where the installer pu this files?

Any suggestions?

Hate to say it, but I just had a similar problem with the installer. Mine just wouldn't launch, no message, just wouldn't launch nor install.

I re-installed my system, with a clean install, and now in the process of gathering everything up to return to my working mode.

Good luck

I am also experiencing problems with Installer apps.

I'm making an attempt to solve the problem without having to reintall my entire system. Not to mention that it would mean a day or two of downtime that I can't afford. I've been reading on all these users successfully fixing their problems but I haven't heard any of them having problems with the Installer.apps.

Anyone out there. Any light on this issue???

I've just solved the problem. I hope the yours is the same.
I don't know why but in my system there wasn't /tmp directory and the installer can't create it!!!
I discovered this by Pacifist error message!!!

I created the /tmp directory by terminal and the program now works!!!!

good luke

I've seen this problem with Installer.app before. One short term fix is to use the installer app on the Mac OS X installation CD. It isn't like the installer is an everyday application, so this work around at least saves you from having to reinstall the system.

The Installer.app on the Mac OSX Installation CD doesn't allow you to install other applications other than those within that CD. How are you able to perform any of the updates or fixes? I'm missing something. I can't get past the installation because it just hangs there without any options, buttons "showing". It does open the Installer.app window but it lacks all of the information within including the ability to click on the buttons.

Anybody with a Real solution to this problem? (Detailed) Step by step please??? It would be greatly appreciated.

apparently, /tmp directory already exists at the root level. Could it be the contents of that /tmp directory that are corrupted or something, thus not letting Installer.app work properly?

Also, downloaded pacifist from the link provided. When deployed it just hangs with no ability to open any packages.

Any suggestions? BTW... thanks for all the responses so far and for all of your time in this matter.

Whoops, I over edited... this is what it was supposed to say...

I'm in the same position. Every kind of installer program or updater, apple or 3rd party, stops responding as soon as I hit install. I can pick the volume agree to the contract, etc. I have repaired permissions, repaired the disk, created a new user, changed passwords, checked for the temp file (it's there) all for naught. I don't get any messages either, just that inssuferable beachball.

Also, my powerbook G4 has just awoken from a several month slumber. I believe the firmware was corrupted and it kept sending me to that white screen with command prompt, regardless of what keys I pushed with the install CD in the drive. I forget what that white screen is called... I tried everything in the book for that one too, mac-boot, etc., but I eventually gave up. I was going to take it into the mac store tomorrow and turned it on just to see and it booted up just fine but now I can't install the updates from the past few months...

So, I'm replying to myself... but I thought I'd share what happened to my mac. I think it did have something to do with the password for my user, everytime it froze was when the installer would usually ask for my password. I fiddled around with users, creating new ones, changing my password, etc. and the admin and eventually she started installing again.
