Problem with Mac The Ripper

Hello,

I am new to the forum and I have a little problem. I am trying (for like 3 weeks now) to get movies on my ipod so I can watch them while I am deployed in the desert. I only have about 4 weeks before I leave and I am started to get frantic. I have tried all methods and programs and can not get any to work like they say they are supposed to. The closest I have come though is with Mac the Ripper. I rip the DVD with no problem. It gives me some files I don't need, which I delete and it also give me the .VOD files that I do. The poblem is that there are usally around 6 or 7 files which I use Isquint to convert ,but when the files are converted to mp4, some are in most are in English, but some may be in Spanish or French. Is there a way I can eliminate this problem and get everything in english or is there a free program out there that I can use. Here is a list of what I have tried and could not get to work. Any help would be appreciated.

Handbrake

What exactly was the problem you had with Handbrake? In my experience it's by far the easiest way to go, so it makes sense to focus on fixing it.

Another method you could use would be to rip it with Mac the Ripper, then convert the VIDEO_TS folder with ffmpegX.

My problem with handbrake is that I would let it go for 8 hours or so and it would never give me the done message. So I would quit it and I would have a corrupted mp4 that quicktime would not open. Should I let it go longer? Is this normal? I understand that it takes a while, but realistically; how long should it take for a 1.5GHz G4 Powerbook??

Well, it takes a few hours on a 2 Ghz iMac, so I'd say that 14 hours would be your max, probably. Make sure that you have max processor usage enabled in energy settings (To reduce time spent processing)

Time depends on the codec and size. On my Mac Mini (1.25GHz G4), ripping a movie using plain ol' MPEG4 (via ffmpeg in Handbrake) only takes 3-6 hours usually. Encoding with H.264 takes waaaaaay longer (20+ hours). These numbers are from encoding DVD-sized content (around 640-720 pixels wide), though. iPod-sized content should take less time.

However long it takes, if you just see the progress bar sitting still forever, then it's a problem.

In fact, I've had the same problem with Handbrake myself. It would stay at 100% forever, but never actually finish. There was nothing I could do. Eventually the problem just went away, but I have no idea why. I thought the new version fixed the problem, but a quick look at the Handbrake forums shows that some people are still having the problem. You might want to check out the forum for some hit-or-miss tips on getting past it.

Or, again, you could use ffmpegX. It's a bit harder to work with, but it ought to get the job done.

Once MTR finishes, you have a movie folder with a VIDEO_TS folder
inside it. DVD Player will play that directly. Unless you're wild to save
disk space, go with that -- you get the whole DVD, special features
and all. Or you can tell MTR to do only a main feature extraction to
save some space. DVD Player will open that one, too.

I don't understand why you're doing or looking into other processing,
especially if you're in a hurry.
