Problem with Mail after Panther upgrade

Does anyone know if the Panther version of Mail changed its handling of SSL from Jaguar's version? I have two email accounts, one of which requires SSL. After upgrading, my non-SSL account works fine, but the department's mail server rejects my password for the SSL account. I checked the SSL account via Webmail, and my password works fine. My network administrator would rather have me switch to Eudora (which he showed worked fine from our Mac lab), then find out how to fix the problem.

Following numerous suggestions in other posts, I have fixed my permissions and fixed the keychain access.

Any help would be appreciated greatly.

Do you have the server settings set correctly for that account? In Preferences, accounts- click once on the account name. Go to Account Information and at the bottom click on Server settings.
Make sure you have all the information correct. A typo in the password will throw everything off. And as you type, you will not see the actual letters.
Then check the advanced section of that account. Make sure you have authentication selected.

Yes, I believe I have the proper settings. I deleted and re-typed my password (but, the Mail popup window asks me to enter my password anyway, and it still rejects it). I set SSL authentication. I set the proper port. I believe the problem is with the protocol that passes my password to the mail server. Since the mail server accepted my password from Mail under Jaguar, and then did not when I upgraded to Panther, I thought it must be because Panther Mail changed its SSL protocol handling somehow.
