problem with samba

I'm trying to solve this problem I have with samba for quite some time. I've checked various sources and no luck.

I have a server in a datacenter and wish to run samba across a wan connection. Security will be implemented later (vpn). Right now I'm just trying to get samba shares accessible.

I can get samba to work on a local lan...

Most of the tutorials/howtos are for local setups.. If anyone can offer help, I'd really appreciate it.

I know a little about networking, but you need to post details if we're gonna solve this.

What kind of server, and what software is it running? What kind of network do you have set up? Are you running Mac OS X Server?

If you want samba over WAN, then I'd be willing to bet that a VPN is the only way to go, and sharing SMB sources over IP won't be possible without VPN.
