On my PowerBook 520c, sometimes the LCD screen gets a little funky....like no screen to half a screen. On my laptop, it's the ribbon connector going into the LCD board that gets loose. I just remove the plate at the bottom of the LCD support, unplug teh ribbon cable from the LCD board and plug it in again and everything works fine. I don't know if the iBooks have this plate near the key board, sounds like a trip back to Apple to get it repaired.

Hey, when your comp boots up do you see anything on the screen besides the plain gray? I had the same thing happen to me. I would boot up and the screen would turn gray, no happy mac, cursor, or anything. Then something inside my computer would make a beeping noise (I promise it didn't come from the speaker). I think the hard drive was making it. I would just press the restart button a few times and it would eventually boot up correctly.

All this happened after I tried defragging my hard drive with Norton SystemWorks. It has screwed with the startup, and I shouldn't have done it in the first place, I couldn't even tell a difference on speed or anything.

Anyone else experience these problems. I would startup with a CD, and find my hard drive did not mount, that is why I think the hard drive can't be mounted or something, and that is making the noise. I've searched for an answer, but haven't found one yet.

Sometimes my PowerBook 520c does make a high-pitched sqeaking/squealing noise. That is the hard drive attempting to startup. It eventually does startup. I just attributed it to age. Sometimes I see a few flashes of colorful lines at upon pressing the power button; that is also an indicator that the ribbon connector has worked itself loose and needs to be unplugged and replugged in again. Sometimes this happens without closing the screen down. I think it must be thermal expansion and contraction working the damn thing loose. There is also one connector that I cannot physically get to on the left side of the LCD screen. I just keep pressing in that area until the screen straightens up and works right - REALLY hi tech, I know, but it works. Apple obviously won't fix a PowerBook 520c - it's too old, that's why I left screen mirroring on in the event I MUST connect to an external montor.
