i have several software packages (.img, .dmg) i cannot install simply because "there is no mountable file systems"... and these are made for OS X, which is what I use..Is there something i don't know? or is there a problem with these fileS? please help, i am literally clueless...

BTW, what Mac do you have specifically? I remember something similar happening with my father's Power Mac G5 and it started happening once I upgraded him from 10.3.3 up to 10.3.9. Apparently, I needed to install a firmware upgrade on that Power Mac G5 and once that was installed I was able to open up .dmg files again.

Is this a Power Mac G4, PowerBook G4, iBook G4, iMac G4?

Check here for more information regarding your Macintosh. The information you provided I believe is only the version of "G4" CPU that's in your Mac.

According to this page, your eMac doesn't need a firmware update.

The other opion you might want to try is to boot from the install discs that came with that eMac. Once at the welcome screen of the installation, go to the menu and select to Launch Disk Utility (I believe it's under File, but I'm not sure). Once Disk Utility launches, have it repair the hard drive. If it fixed something, have it run again until it says that the volume is OK. After that, reboot from the hard drive and try to open the .dmg and .img files.

I got that error too, but the problem was a faulty download.. not even an apple-downloaded package will mount?
