Problems with many things

Hello,

Lately I've had lots of problems with my precious mac:

It all started with safari, which just stopped working. At the same time I wasn't able to update any programs with update-tool. So those two problems probably are related. Firefox works just fine and so does mail.

I tried to fix the problem with disk utility, but it said that HFS is damaged and cannot be repaired... So what to do?? I don't even know wtf is HFS... ;)

Can someone please help me?

Before it's too late, back up your user folder and any stray documents!!!
After that, you have a couple of options:

1. Buy (if you don't have the latest version) and run DiskWarrior. It may be able to restore your boot volume to working order, where Disk Utility failed.

2. If you cannot get the latest version of DiskWarrior, then after backing up, reformat drive (writing zeros option allows the Disk Utility the opportunity to lock bad sectors if they exist) and reinstall the OS, third party applications, create your user account, and restore your files to the new account.

Back up now in any case!

You should also get in the habit of describing your precious Mac:
Which Model
How old it is
What version of the OS
RAM quantity
How many drives
How many partitions
It's favorite movie, color, what kind of bird it would be if it could be a bird...

I did back up first, then started to play...
I must take a look for that disk warrior.. So we really are talking about some serious probelm..
Thank you!

have you tried doing a full disk repair? on start-up, at the point of the chime, hold command+s to enter the shell (it'll look like dos, sort of). now, just enter the code:

fsck -fy

that's 'f', 's', 'c', 'k', [space], 'minus/dash', 'f', 'y', and then hit enter. it'll do it's thing and then tell you it fixed things. enter fsck -fy again and repeat until it says 'this volume appears to be ok' if it never gets to that point, format and write to zero's as Flying Meat said.

HFS+ Extended (Journaled) is the file system that mac os uses. if there's a problem with the file system that a disk repair can't fix, then the hard-drive is in a very bad way.

other popular file systems include FAT32, which is the old dos/windows file system, and NTFS which is the current windows file system. FAT32 is older, but has the merit of being usable by both platforms, wheras NTFS and HFS are very specific to each platform.

Thanks to you,(And your clear-enough instructions) I did a full disk repair. It worked fine, now everything seems to be ok with HFS.

But it didn't solve my original problem. Safari still doesn't work and same thing with update-program. Those two programs are the only ones that don't connect to the network. But when I run NetworkDiagnostics, everything seems to be fine with network (all the little balls are green). And Firefox seems to work fine and so does mail. It's weird.

Can you guys help me?

Oh yeah, almost forgot again:
mac with the problems:
PBG4, 1,5GHz
almost 2 years old
running OSX 10.4.8
512 Mt DDR SDRAM
1 partition only
Favourite movie: Since this is my girl friend mac, I think it must be My Fair Lady
And it would be a humming bird, since it's small and beautiful (12'' PB)
