Problems with V740 Verizon Aircard

Hello all,

I started having issues with my v740 aircard a few days ago. Now I'm stumped. It started not connecting for some reason that I don't remember. I tried removing the adapter from the network preferences and then letting it be re-added when I inserted the pccard. It was properly re-discovered, but now says "authentication failure" when I try to connect. Which is strange because VZW aircards do not require user inputted authentication credentials.

Then I tried installing the latest VZAccess software, which went fine. I've never connected with the Verizon software, never had to, but I thought I'd try it. Clicking on connect in the VZAccess software comes back with an "Authorization failed" message as well. VZA is obviously calling some config that exists on my macbook which is causing this auth failure.

My question is how do I completely remove the Novatel CDMA drivers and config? Everything I've tried apparently hasn't worked. This card works fine using the Vista OS I have loaded via Bootcamp. I know the card is good, it's a matter of the driver and support files. There has to be a way to kill all the VZ software off the system, and reset all of the Apple CDMA support files so that it goes back to default when inserted. Apple incorporated support for this card in it's OS, but for some reason, that config is hosed. I need to go back to a "fresh install" with that regard, but not actually reinstall os x! So I'm at a loss and very frustrated. I'm not even sure how to troubleshoot the modem/ppp connection.

In the console, even though I have debug logging checked in the aircard's settings in the network pref's, the console ppp log simply shows high level logs.

One other point of note, I've had an Authentication failure message in the windows VZAccess before in the past. A call to Verizon support had the fix in 2 seconds. I had to remove the wireless adapters in the network and sharing center, restart the VZAccess software and click the option to re-run setup assistant. Then it worked. But there is no option like that in OSX. I've tried deleting the adapters, and I've tried re-running the setup, but it simply deletes the old VZ network profile and re-creates with the same issue. So obviously not the same fix in OS X.

Thanks for any hints or help. It's much appreciated!

I've seen this issue with both v740 and v760 Aircards if you do not use an admin account or better for the installation process, the Verizon CDMA/EVDO script file does not install with correct permissions. Use a local admin account to perform the VZAccessManager install and set up. Open up the root Library\Modem Scripts folder and look for the latest script file. Modify the permissions on the file so that all users have read access. You could try running repair file permissions from the Disk Utility menu, but that may be overkill for your needs.
