Processor sharing over LAN or even Firewire

Does anyone know anything about processor sharing that are on a LAN together. I am going to be doing a bunch of video compression and to make it less time consuming I was going to try and link up some other machines that are in the room.

What software should I use? Can two computers be linked by firewire and use this software?

It all depends on what program(s) you'll use to do the processor sharing -- a program must be specifically written to take advantage of distributed processing... you can't just automatically use spare processor cycles on another machine with any old program.

I do believe that Apple's Final Cut Suite allows distributed processing -- at least, Logic Pro does:

Apple also offers XGrid for scientific tasks, although it can be used for pretty much any distributed processing task:

I do believe Apple's QMaster and Compressor programs, included with Final Cut Studio, can also do distributed processing:
