Protected PDF ?? -- workaround

I've been given the task of creating pdf packets from a bunch of smaller pdf files.

I'm doing this in Acrobat 6. Occasionally, it tells me that the pdf is locked or protected.

Does anyone know of a way around this, so that I can combine it with another pdf file ?

(in some cases these pdfs are pdfs that I scanned !! so they shouldn't be protected)

I've tried opening with Preview -- Print/Save As pdf and checking permissions.. and nada.. I can't seem to find a way around. Has anyone else seen/heard of this problem ? Know any workarounds or solutions.??

Click on the file icon, then go to the File menu and select Get Info. Under owner and Permissions you should be able to unlock the file.
 
You may accidentally have your Acrobat preferences set to save the PDF's you're creating for your larger publication with password protection. I'd suggest your first stop is your Acrobat preferences to see if this is set.
