OK so I've heard of a feature on AIM clients where instead of the persons SN you can see their name.. I think iChat does that but can i do it in proteus? and if so how?

I'm *fairly* sure that you cannot use aliases in Proteus, however it's been some time since I've used the app. The Alias feature is great, and if thats what you're looking for, I'd recommend trying Adium if you haven't already. It lacks some of the flash of Proteus, but works excellently, and handles Aliases very nicely.

Actually, Proteus have no problems assigning aliases to your friends (and foes! 
), but IIRC you cannot assign the aliases before you have added them to your list. Then you can edit their names, and type in whatever you want

Adium does aliases? boy I must not have been looking in the right place. I used Adium all the time, so spill the beans how do I do it?

You go to the contacts editing panel, where you'd add and delete buddies, and click in the space to the right of each buddy, in the alias column. Also in the preferences you may want to change how it displays names in your buddylist and/or IM windows, but that's a matter of taste. Enjoy!
