I use a Mac at home and at work. I want to have my home directory on an external hard drive so i can take my files easily with me, as well as my preference settings, Firefox bookmarks, etc.
I knew how to do this in earlier version of OS X, but now in 10.4 it doesn't work. When booting the OS creates a fake Volume (i.e. ExtVolume1) and mounts my home directory with the bare essentials in there. The actual ExtVolume is still mounted, but it must occur later after the OS looks for the home directory.
I looked into setting the /etc/fstab file, but it has been depracated.
