It there any way to spin down one internal hard drive and not all others? I have two drives in my Gigabit Ethernet G4, one of which I only need to have on when backing up. The drives are on two different busses. Is there a utility that does this? Should I just get an external drive case? Is it better for the backup drive to just let it spin up with the main drive? I just want to extend the drive's life as long as possible.

I think it is not possible to put one drive to sleep.
To make it last as long as possible get a hard drive cooling bay.
