Quick question about SMB

Well actually two questions...

1. When downloading from my university using SMB from windows (or linux) machines, my processor is used intensely. So much that my PowerBook g4 becomes quite slow. Why is this? Something to do with translating the SMB protocol?

2. Can you resume copies? For instance my files I download from the university network through my (slow) cable connection? That is the standard copy in the finder.

There was a Windows utility I used to use called totalCopy (if any of you know it) it replaced the normal windows copy, with a more advanced one where one could resume files and even more important it wouldn't delete (or unlink) already downloaded portions of a file. Is there an equvalent for OS X?

Thx
