Quicktime 7 "New Player" stopped working

I'd been running Quicktime 7 for years on my Powerbook. I upgraded to Quicktime Pro last January. I stopped updating QT at 7.3 (don't remember whether it was before or after going to Pro.)

A while ago, I noticed that the "File->New Player" command doesn't work - choosing it from the menu or typing cmd-N does not open a new player: the menu item flashes but nothing happens, and no error msg or anything.
"New video recording" and "New audio recording" commands do work.

I'm not sure that I ever specifically chose "New Player" until a few weeks ago, so I don't know when it stopped working.
This isn't a big problem per se except that a script I use for iTunes no longer works either (Join Together from Doug's Applescripts for iTunes). "Join Together" used to work with QT even before I upgraded to QT Pro and also with QT Pro. Now it quits just at the point where it would be trying to create a new player.
Hoping to fix the problem, I updated Quicktime to 7.3.1 and then to 7.5 but to no avail.
Is this a problem with the Quicktime app itself, QT libraries, or with the OS?

I can't think of what else could have changed on my system to make "New Player" stop working.

I'd even try uninstalling Quicktime and re-installing, but I can't find instructions on how to do this. (How can I uninstall QT anyway?)

I've searched for information about this problem on Google and otehr forums, but haven't found anything similar.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

I suggest that you update your QuickTime installation to the most recent version that is compatible with your OS. Then enter your QuickTime Pro serial number. There is no accounting for third-party add-ons. For those, I suggest that you search the developer's website for updates.

I don't know how it happened, but "New Player" is now working!

I can't think of anything I changed in the OS or in Quicktime, but I can now create new QT players. And the "Join Together" Applescript doesn't abort when scripting QT.

But now, I have a different problem - in iCal, the alarm clock Flash movie doesn't play in the alarms. Seems QT 7.3.1 disabled Flash movies for security reasons. Any workarounds? I'm using iCal 1.5.5.

(I'm not ready to shell out for the latest OS X.)
