Quicktime MPEG Problems

most of my video files are .mpg. i recently just bought my imac and i try playing my mpegs on quicktime but it says there is an error. these arent mpeg-2s the are simply mpegs and will not play in quicktime. i had a pc prior to this but that shouldnt make a difference since these files come directly off my hdd camcorder. so what is the problem and how can i fix it?

Buy the QuickTime MPEG Component from Apple.
The OP's files are not in MPEG-2 format. The only fee-based MPEG Component from Apple is for MPEG-2 playback.

His files are identified as .mpg, but are likely to be some non-standard variant of MPEG-1. I suggest that he open these files in VLC. It will likely play them. It will likely also identify the audio-video codec(s). He should also download and install the Perian combined codec.

Funny thing, I just ordered the MPEG Component half an hour ago. It seemed that the Component is for G4 only. So if I some day change to Core 2 Mac, should I order new, and is it even available?

will these actually allow them to play in quciktime though? i have perian. i need to import them into idvd but that means they must open in quicktime itself not VLC...

ok i downloaded perian but its not helping. quicktime just does not want to open these things. if i download the mpeg player from apple will this solve the problem? when i open up properties it just says MPEG it doesnt say 2 or 1. i used these all the time on my pc, it was basically the video format all my programs exported to, and when i imported my dvds it even used this format. it has to be some standard filetype of mpeg. also my camcoreder records in this format. its an hdd could this mean they are actually mpeg2's and just not say it is? im so confused and i need to figure out how to play these things as soon as possible because i need to get a dvd burnt.

ok i just called mac support. the guy was a jerk but said that "well its not gonna pla mpegs. mpegs are for pcs. its not made for macs. try dwonloading ......." i cant remember the name but i did and it still didnt do anything. they are just plain .mpg files. its even listed in the quicktime advanced section that it should play them. so what is going on and should i bu the thing from apple? or will it even help?

I just like to add to my own question: the Apple MPEG2 Component comes
with both PPC and Intel binaries, even if the webpage knows nothing about
Intel.
