I've been having this problem on all my Macs for awhile but haven't seen it mentioned anyplace.
It used to be that under Classic I had no problem running programs that use the QuickTime Music Synthesizer such as FretPet, Virtual Drummer, and Harry The Handsome Executive (yep, Harry uses QTMA for its sounds). The sounds would lag a little, but otherwise they sounded fine. But since I upgraded to 10.1 and/or QuickTime 5 the QuickTime Synthesizer sounds horrible! The sounds are chopped-up, completely unrecognizable, and take a very long time to play.
Is anyone here able to use any of these Classic apps, or other programs that utilize the QuickTime Music Architecture, under 10.1?
