Can't startup to desktop with Jag CD???

Ok is it just me or is it the CD, is this the first time that Apple has released an OS that you can't do a complete startup on?

I put in the Jag 10.2 install disk that I bought from the Apple Store nearby, everything is normal UNTIL all I can get is the installer!?! No desktop. No other options other than to quit the installer and reboot. Which if you're trying to use this as a t/s option it's kind of useless.

Please tell me I'm not the only one...

well, i haven't installed in awhile but i don't think any of the os x install disks functioned as a startup disk with desktop access. i'm sure someone will corect me if i am wrong. :D

The OS X install disks never had a complete, bootable "desktop" system on them -- all you can do is access the OS X installer and the Disk Utility (from the menubar) program. You can either install or check/repair the disk, but nothing else -- no Finder for browsing the hard drive... nothing.

It's tough to make a bootable OS X CD, since OS X needs read/write access to the startup disk -- something a CD can't provide. OS X has no place to create a swap file on a CD.

Some utilities have come out that sort-of allow you to create a bootable OS X CD, but they are, at best, hit and miss.

It's a shame -- I always liked being able to boot up a usable system off the OS 8/9 CDs, even if it were just to copy a few files off of a corrupt hard drive before reinstalling.

I agree. It's nice to have a modern operating system based on unix, but it's horrible to have unix shortcomings like this.
