Rainbow wheel, freezing

I got my mac the summer of 2007. Recently I have been having a problem with the rainbow wheel frequently coming up every few minutes. Sometimes it goes away and others I have to restart my computer completely. My computer has also been running slower lately than usual. I don't know if the 2 have any correlation with each other or not. I did the disk repair it utilities, and also the thing with running the test with the disk, and it didn't seem to help, maybe I didn't complete them or something, I'm not sure. Any help would be very much appreciated, Thank you!

Hi. I hope somebody can help me find a solution for this. I recently got a Macbook Pro 13 in w/ 160GB HD (orig. HD). I'm a first time mac user. I've had the mac for less than 2 mos. At first everything was ok and even commented to some friends and associates and on some forums how great the mac is considering i've been a long time user of windows. Recently the mac would freeze. A rainbow spinning ball would appear and freeze between 15-30 seconds the application I'm on. While on Quicktime, when it becomes operative agin it would advance the video 30 seconds. Sometimes only quicktime is affected but sometimes also all programs would stop operating. Other programs running usually are iMail, Safari, Finder, Excel. Some days there would be 5-10 times this would happen, but on some days it will be ok. I've tried disk utility and repairing permissions.

If there's a fix out there pls tell me as I am starting to get frustrated especially since this is a fairly new mac and would not like to eat my words

Thanks
