RAM Upgrade for Dual G5 1.8Ghz

Hi there I have been looking at various posts about RAM upgrades and am now a bit confused. I have a dual G5 1.8Ghz with 4 DIMM slots on the motherboard. The computer came with a pitiful 256MB, and I want to upgrade to something like 1GB. I have a few questions.
At the moment there is one RAM board installed, if I wanted to slot in a 1GB stick can I simply add it to the 256MB or do I have to swap them? Also I have read that RAM will only work in pairs, so would I HAVE to have 2x512MB boards or can I have just a Single 1GB board for increased flexibility in the future??

many thanks

Ollie

instructions on add ram to your mac from apple is here. also apple states about the ram
Support for the following DIMMs (in pairs):
128MB DIMMs (64-bit-wide, 128- or 256-Mbit)
256MB DIMMs (64-bit-wide, 128- or 256-Mbit)
512MB DIMMs (64-bit-wide, 256-Mbit)
1GB DIMMs (64-bit-wide, 256-Mbit)
so what you have is 2 128's in there now, with 2 open slots. get 2 512's and put them in the 2 remaining open slots. after that you will have to pull out the old ram to add new ram.

I have ordered four or five DIMMS for my Macs from Memorytogo.com. They make it easy (as do many sites) to look up your particular model and get the right chips. Memorytogo's chips have always worked flawlessly. I guess I've lucked out so far.

I also have a DP 1.8 Ghz G5, and I did install two 512 MB DIMMS. It works quite well.

At the moment there is one RAM board installed,

You would need to look again.
Your PowerMac can't boot with only one memory stick installed, you must have identical pairs installed in pairs of slots. If you look at the positions of the slots, slots 2 and 3 take a pair, and slots 1 and 4 can also add a pair. As has been stated - 2x128, or 2x256, or 2x512, or 2x1GB - in each pair of slots. Or, a pair can remain empty. You must have one pair in place to boot.
