Random Lockups

Hi,

First off. I'm a "Switcher". I've had these two macs in my room for almost 6 months now, and I've only used one of them for chatting online while I game on one of my PC's. Now I'm getting rid of the PC's to become a bit more productive, and make my room look cool.

This came as a Dual PowerMac G4 @1ghz/512 Ram default. I booted into the OS X server, played around with it for a few days with an occasional lockup. So, I installed Jaguar, thinking it's the OS X server that' has the problems, and figuring I need a desktop version anyway.

First format and install, all goes well. Then a day later, the random lockups come back. I install all the patches (After around 5 try's) hoping that will solve the problem. No go.

Second Format. All goes well with the install, then during registration, it freezez. I reboot, get past the registration, and here I am now. As of now the Software Update is running in the background, and I'm trying to make sure it's Up-2-date.

A better explination of what happens when it locks up. The black text kind of "over-writing" what's on the screen appears. It gives nothing to specific, no text just numbers and what not. Then the screen fades grey and a little message saying "I need to reboot" appears.

I would love to get past this with these macs. They are awsome pieces of machinery once you get into them. My Dual 800mhz is running like a charm :)

Thanks A Lot for any input!

Hi Moku.

This is usually caused by faulty RAM memory. The black text over-writing the screen is a kernel panic, and the major cause of these is memory errors. Allthough it might be caused by bad media in the hard disk, 90% of the time bad RAM is to blame.

Since your Mac is still under warranty, get it into a trusted local Apple dealer for a repair.
