Re-Encoding Compressed MUSIC??? AAC & MP3 & WAV

I originally have a bunch of music that I've collected over the last couple of years.

All of the music is in .MP3 Format, encoded at 128kbps.

If I re-encode these 128kbps MP3s to 128kbps AAC, will the file ARTIFACT (become lower sound quality than the original mp3) because I am RE-COMPRESSING the file?

Or --- Since it is the same bit-rate, is it not really compressing it any further?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

yes. It will become lower quality.

MP3 compression x AAC compression = lower quality. No matter what the bit rate.

EDIT: Why are you doing this anyway? What possible reason could you have for making them AAC?

It's too bad a lot of the sources were straight off of mixed cassette tapes.

I should have saved the original recording from the tape as a .WAV...

I ended up recording the tapes onto a CD at 128kbps MP3.. darn, hella dumb.

I'll dig up all my old sources and re-encode as AAC.

thanks for the info fellas.
