I've got some documents or rather videos that i've got to watch for Unviersity and I can't open them using my mac because it doesn't have a mime reader. Can anyone help me or tell me of a reliable mime reader I can download for free?

Thanks!! Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Your problem almost always means that the video is WMV. Download and install Flip4Mac.

The problem with my mac stems from the fact that I can't actually donwload the file...

I have to open it in the blackboard site (a university course website).
This message pops up from my browser when I try to open it:

Safari cannot find the Internet plug-in.

The page "Blackboard Academic Suite: has content of MIME type "application/x-oleobject". Because you don't have a plug in installed for this MIME type, this content can't be displayed.

It's really freaking annoying and I need to watch the video for an assignment :S please help... or will flip4mac take care of this?

Thanks so much, any help is really greatly appreciated

x-oleobject indicates that the site is possibly trying to use ActiveX to display some content, and ActiveX is only available in Internet Explorer running under Windows.

You cannot view this content from a Macintosh while using OS X.

You will need to access this content from Internet Explorer under Windows. You can install Windows on your Mac if you have a licensed Windows install CD/DVD using one of the following:

1) CrossOver
2) VMWare Fusion
3) Parallels
4) BootCamp

Plenty of discussion going on here (found with a simple search) about the pros and cons of each.

Just a point of clarification: Bootcamp, Parallels, and VMWare require a licensed copy of Windows. CrossOver Mac does not require a copy of Windows at all; we run just the apps, without Windows.

I have just installed VMware Fusion 3.0 and Windows 7.

I am trying to Use IE with ActiveX controls enable so that I can take advantage of the datasheet view within Sharepoint.

Having installed both apps I still do not seem to have ActiveX running.

Any ideas how I can get ActiveX in my mac?

Thanks

What does this mean?

Please elaborate... greatly. Are you receiving an error message that pertains to ActiveX and IE? If so, what is the exact wording of the entire error message?

We need you to be our eyes, since we can't see what you're seeing on your computer. It's relatively easy to provide too little information, but virtually impossible to provide too much. The former makes us have to ask more questions; the latter, solve problems quicker.

"Having installed both apps I still do not seem to have ActiveX running."

I am referring to the sentence two lines above where I say: -

"I have just installed VMware Fusion 3.0 and Windows 7."

I am not getting an error message as such - the text at the bottom of the browser is pasted below.

"The list is displayed in Standard view. It cannot be displayed in Datasheet view for one or more of the following reasons: A datasheet component compatible with Windows SharePoint Services is not installed, your browser does not support ActiveX controls, or support for ActiveX controls is disabled."

Datasheets in Sharepoint require ActiveX. It works perfectly on a PC through IE. I have a Mac and so have installed VMware Fusion 3.0 and Windows 7 with the hope that ActiveX would be included - they appear not to be.

I have gone through and enabled all ActiveX settings in IE - but it still does not seem to work.
