My mac has been acting really slow lately... it takes a while to boot , and programs take a while to load as well... im new to mac so im not really sure where to look for the problem, any help is appreciated.

Hi jsmk
How big hard drive, and of which how much empty space do you have?
Have you installed hundreds of fonts on your system? (these would slow..)
Have you tried maintenance programs such as OnyX to run cache cleaning and maintenance with them? You can start with OnyX and a bit more information about your system. (Version of Mac OS X, how long have you had it, how much RAM, since when is it slow etc)

Hello, these are my specs

Macbook Pro (not the newest version but recently new, about 6 months old) running Leopard 10.5.6, 200 GB HD, 2.4 Ghz intel core duo, 2 gb RAM.

I do have a lot of fonts (i'm thinking this could be the reason), i have 110 gb available, i used MacCleanse once but didn't really work for me... i'll download OnyX right away

thanks

Fonts do take a while to load - you could try and see if they are the reason by disabling e.g. all user added fonts with Font Book (or whatever font management software you use). If the speed is fine without those fonts then they add to the speed. But there may be other reasons too - fonts are at least easy and fast to test. And if they aren't the ones to look at then simply enable them all after.
