recover deleted items

Just drag the items from the trash and drop them wherever you want them or select whichever files you want to keep then do a control click or right click and select put back.

This is true, if you have already emptied the trash (more likely) then it is possible but difficult and expensive - and the first thing you must do is stop using the machine immediately - the data is there but the space ti is in is no longer protected so any time you save a file or anything writes to the drive you are potentially overwriting the thing you need to recover.

I've used this product in the past, and have had varying levels of success. If you accidentally deleted something, stop using your computer immediately, and if you want to try Data Rescue 3, get another mac, run the software on *another* mac, and connect the first mac to the other mac when booted in firewire target mode. (by booting it while holding down "t").

Data Rescue 3 can be found here: http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php

I think they have a trial that will allow you to see if it can find your files before you commit to purchase.
